Structuring refers to the systematic breaking down of a complex problem, in order to logically and effectively get to a resolution.
Being able to tackle problems in this manner is a critical part of a consultant’s toolkit, so convincing your interviewer that you have this skill is crucial in handling almost any case question successfully. It is therefore worth investing significant time in.
A good way to go about this is to learn a concrete approach that will ensure that you can structure a case of any type without running off on a tangent or forgetting any key aspect of the problem. For this, we have developed what we call the “IDEAS test”, a checklist which will help you make sure that the structure you come up with is effective.
